By Grace Cavalier

quiet hums of yesterday float rudely close to my hand

I try to sing the song you taught me without letting the sun claim you-

even though the thought ran out long ago

do you know every concern I’ve cast in your direction

now that you’ve surpassed them all?

do you sigh heavy,

or fondly guide their evaporation?

hopes ascend into a viscous perhaps,

grow feet, ferment,

then resign to dissipate inside a soft “not yet”

regardless of moment

you were mine once.

understanding will forget me soon- but

          I won’t you

until then,

absorb all I couldn’t say

  and wave me tenderly hello
